Synopsis via Goodreads:
Set in a kingdom where danger lurks beneath the sea, mermaids seek vengeance with song, and magic is a choice, Adalyn Grace’s All the Stars and Teeth is a thrilling fantasy for fans of Stephanie Garber’s Caraval and Sarah J. Maas’s Throne of Glass series.
She will reign.
As princess of the island kingdom Visidia, Amora Montara has spent her entire life training to be High Animancer—the master of souls. The rest of the realm can choose their magic, but for Amora, it’s never been a choice. To secure her place as heir to the throne, she must prove her mastery of the monarchy’s dangerous soul magic.
When her demonstration goes awry, Amora is forced to flee. She strikes a deal with Bastian, a mysterious pirate: he’ll help her prove she’s fit to rule, if she’ll help him reclaim his stolen magic.
But sailing the kingdom holds more wonder—and more peril—than Amora anticipated. A destructive new magic is on the rise, and if Amora is to conquer it, she’ll need to face legendary monsters, cross paths with vengeful mermaids, and deal with a stow-away she never expected… or risk the fate of Visidia and lose the crown forever.
I am the right choice. The only choice. And I will protect my kingdom.
All the Stars and Teeth is the book of my dreams! I loved everything about it. The world, magic and characters were absolutely incredible. This was my first read of 2020 and wow, what a great way to start off the new year!
I am completely blown away by the world that Adalyn Grace has created. As her debut, this story draws you in and will not let you go until the very last word. You will be whisked away by beautiful & descriptive writing. While reading, I could picture walking through Arida and being on board Keel Haul. It was magical. All the Stars and Teeth takes you on an epic journey on the sea. There will be tons of twists, turns and danger along the way. You will not want to stop reading!
The magic system was so interesting and different from anything I’ve ever read. The kingdom of Visidia is broken into islands with each one being the home of a certain magic. Once a person chooses a magic they’d like to practice, they go live on the designated island. Of all the different types, curse magic and soul magic play the biggest role in the story. Both of these are complex, dangerous, and pretty violent. I loved learning about how they work and what their limitations are. Everything was thoroughly explained and I never once felt confused.
Then there were the amazing characters! Amora is the princess of Visidia and heir to the throne. She loves the kingdom more than anything in the world. She goes above and beyond in order to protect it. She is so fierce and won’t let anyone or anything stand in her way. Amora definitely makes my all time favorite characters list. The rest of the crew is fabulous as well. Bastian was mysterious and hilarious. Ferrick was sweet and protective. And Vataea was powerful and dangerous. I loved the connection that they shared and I am looking forward to seeing more of them in the sequel.
This was not a romance based fantasy, but I will say there was a relationship that I was living for. The chemistry between the two was literal fire. With the way this book ended though, I am SO interested to see what will happen next for them. I was in complete shock reading the last few pages. Ahhhh!
I know for a fact that this book will be on my mind for quite a while. I’m also very aware that it is only January but I cannot imagine this book not being on my favorites list for 2020. If you are looking for a fast paced fantasy that is full of action, magic and adventure…put All the Stars and Teeth on your TBR! You will not regret it.
