This is the second book in a trilogy, please be aware that there may be spoilers!!
Title: Gemina (The Illuminae Files #2)
Authors: Amie Kaufman & Jay Kristoff
Publisher: Random House
My rating: ★★★★★
Synopsis via Goodreads:
Moving to a space station at the edge of the galaxy was always going to be the death of Hanna’s social life. Nobody said it might actually get her killed.
The sci-fi saga that began with the breakout bestseller Illuminaecontinues on board the Jump Station Heimdall, where two new characters will confront the next wave of the BeiTech assault.
Hanna is the station captain’s pampered daughter; Nik the reluctant member of a notorious crime family. But while the pair are struggling with the realities of life aboard the galaxy’s most boring space station, little do they know that Kady Grant and the Hypatia are headed right toward Heimdall, carrying news of the Kerenza invasion.
When an elite BeiTech strike team invades the station, Hanna and Nik are thrown together to defend their home. But alien predators are picking off the station residents one by one, and a malfunction in the station’s wormhole means the space-time continuum might be ripped in two before dinner. Soon Hanna and Nik aren’t just fighting for their own survival; the fate of everyone on the Hypatia—and possibly the known universe—is in their hands.
But relax. They’ve totally got this. They hope.
I’ve tried to write this review so many times, but I literally didn’t have the words to say how amazing this book was. I had pretty high hopes for Gemina and let me just say, I was NOT disappointed!
Like I said in my Illuminae review, I HIGHLY recommend the audiobook! It is truly incredible. The full cast & sound effects lets you experience this story in such a unique way. I’ve listened to so many audiobooks and I’ve loved a lot of them, but The Illuminae Files takes the top spot. I will 100% listen to them over & over in the future!
Yes, I also have to mention the format again. The story is told through journal entries, messages, interviews, etc. It’s crazy cool. I particularly loved the artwork that was included this time. I believe it was done by Marie Lu and it was beautiful!
In Gemina we follow a whole new group of characters. I’ll be honest, I was a bit nervous about this. Kady & Ezra were the absolute best so I wasn’t sure how I’d feel about new people. Turns out I had no reason to be worried at all!
Hanna: She is the daughter of Heimdall’s captain. In the beginning she kind of acts like a precious flower, but you just wait! She will surprise you. She is a badass & a force to be reckoned with!
Nik: He’s the bad boy with a big heart. He gets through tough situations with humor, which is something I definitely related to. We get a backstory for him & oh boy, will it break your heart!
Ella: She is the hacker of the group and Nik’s cousin. She is snarky & a bit of a jokester. Ella is paralyzed, but does she let that hold her back?? Absolutely freaking not! I love her so much it hurts. Huge thank you to Amie & Jay for the amazing disability representation!
Just like Illuminae, Gemina was fast paced, action packed and so thrilling. Every page left me wanting more. I read half of this book in one day, which is something I never do. I’m a slow reader so it usually takes me a few days to finish a book, but not with Gemina. I couldn’t put it down. I was so invested.
I was in constant fear for these characters. There so many threats put against hem. They had a BeiTech team trying to kill them, alien things trying to kill them and they had a wormhole problem that was trying to kill everybody. The stakes were high & it was so intense. I’m sure my blood pressure was through the roof.
The twists & turns…oh my gosh they were so good! I feel like I was being pranked through some of the book. There were things that I thought were real but then the authors were like….HAHA no just kidding! That made for an emotional roller coaster.
I do want to mention that Gemina definitely dives deeper into science things. Luckily, the authors describe things in a way that’s very easy to understand. I never felt confused…which is saying something because I was never good at science in school.
I’m so looking forward to Obsidio. I can’t wait to see how this trilogy wraps up. I mean, I really don’t want it to be over, but I can only assume it’s going to go out with a bang!
