Title: Illuminae (The Illuminae Files #1)

Authors: Amie Kaufman & Jay Kristoff

Pages: 599

Publisher: Knopf Books for Young Readers

My rating: ★★★★★

Synopsis via Goodreads:

This morning, Kady thought breaking up with Ezra was the hardest thing she’d have to do. This afternoon, her planet was invaded.

The year is 2575, and two rival megacorporations are at war over a planet that’s little more than an ice-covered speck at the edge of the universe. Too bad nobody thought to warn the people living on it. With enemy fire raining down on them, Kady and Ezra—who are barely even talking to each other—are forced to fight their way onto an evacuating fleet, with an enemy warship in hot pursuit.

But their problems are just getting started. A deadly plague has broken out and is mutating, with terrifying results; the fleet’s AI, which should be protecting them, may actually be their enemy; and nobody in charge will say what’s really going on. As Kady hacks into a tangled web of data to find the truth, it’s clear only one person can help her bring it all to light: the ex-boyfriend she swore she’d never speak to again.

Review:

First off, I HIGHLY recommend the audiobook! It was incredible. With a full cast & sound effects, it makes for such a fun reading experience.

It has been a few weeks since I finished Illuminae and I seriously haven’t stopped thinking about it since. It completely blew me away. I’ll admit, I’m not much of a sci-fi reader, but this book was so addictive. I’m really considering a reread very soon!

Kady: She is a total badass. She’s smart, brave and very determined. She is put through some tough situations but keeps her head up through it all.

Ezra: I adore him! He was sarcastic & adorable. I shipped him & Kady so much.

AIDAN: Okay, I hated this AI for most of the book, eventually I fell in love with it though. AIDAN doesn’t understand people at all, but it will do anything & everything to protect them. Hands down the best character!

Illuminae is told through interviews, files, emails, etc. I will say that it took me a little bit to get used to the format, but after I did, I absolutely loved it! It’s such a clever & unique way to tell a story.

This book was INTENSE! I was on the edge of my seat the entire time. From the beginning to the end it was fast paced and action packed. There was never a dull moment.

It’s full of twists and turns that will leave you in shock! There were a couple times when I was literally yelling because I couldn’t believe what was going on!

My feelings were all over the place. On one page I would be laughing then the next page I’d be crying. I wasn’t expecting to go on such an emotional roller coaster.

The ending has me SO excited to pick up the next book. Illuminae was a wild ride but I’m sure things are about to get even crazier!
