Since this is the second book in a series…please be aware that there may be some spoilers for The Cruel Prince.
Title: The Wicked King (The Folk of the Air #2)
Author: Holly Black
Publisher: Little, Brown Books for Young Readers
My rating: ★★★★★
Synopsis via Goodreads:
Jude has bound the wicked king, Cardan, to her, and made herself the power behind the throne. Navigating the constantly shifting political alliances of Faerie would be difficult enough if Cardan were biddable. But he does everything in his power to humiliate and undermine her, even as his fascination with her remains undiminished.
When it becomes all too clear that someone close to Jude means to betray her, threatening her life and the lives of everyone she loves, Jude must uncover the traitor and fight her own complicated feelings for Cardan to maintain control as a mortal in a faerie world.
Okay so I am going to be as vague as I possibly can. I literally don’t want to spoil anything.
Holy cow. I was not expecting to love this book as much as I did. I really liked The Cruel Prince, but The Wicked King blew me away. I learned that book hangovers are the real deal. After I finished this I didn’t pick anything else up for five days. I couldn’t stop thinking about what I had just read!
The Wicked King picks up five months after the crazy events of The Cruel Prince. Cardan is the High King of Faerie, but Jude is basically the one in charge. While Cardan is trying to undermine everything Jude does, the queen of the undersea is planning to make her move against the throne.
Holly Black’s writing is magical beyond belief. She knows just how to draw you in & get you completely invested in the story. Her descriptions of the faerie world has me in love. She truly is a queen.
The political intrigue is fantastic. You can’t trust anyone or anything. You think you know what someone is plotting…but nope, you were wrong! There are so many mind games and I love it.
I didn’t necessarily ship Jude & Cardan during The Cruel Prince, but um my feelings have changed A LOT! The romance in this book was 10/10 amazing. Honestly one of the best hate to love relationships I’ve ever read. So good!
I am still trying to wrap my mind around the ending. Like what?! I thought the ending for book one was crazy, but this one passes that by far. It was so unexpected. I’m not sure if the decision was made to protect someone or if it was out of pure spite. Either way, it was bananas.
As you can tell, I absolutely loved The Wicked King. It destroyed me, but I give it all the stars in the world. I’m highly anticipating the third book. The wait is going to be rough.
